Speed Limit Changes on Some Local Roads

TDC advises that new, lowered speed limits will take effect on 18 December 2018 on the following roads:

Lower Queen Street (extended), Landsdowne Road, Best Island Road, Barnett Avenue, Blackbyre Road, River Road (Appleby), Redwood Road, Research Orchard Road, Pukeko Lane

Most of these roads are changing from 100 km/hr down to 80 km/hr.

See here for a more detailed list.

Also see the minutes of our recent AGM for notes on a new review process for speed limits being established at TDC and how to get roads added to that review. Old Coach Road and Central Road had already been mentioned at the meeting.

TDC: Waimea Dam goes ahead

On 30 November 2018, Tasman District Council has confirmed the Waimea Community Dam will be built.

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne said: “This project will deliver a secure source of water for our community for the next 100 years. It will greatly improve the health of the Waimea River, which can’t sustain the demands we’re making of it at the moment. The benefits for our region are immense and will be felt by everyone who chooses to make Tasman their home for generations to come.”

Construction is due to begin in early 2019 and will be managed by the Council-Controlled Organisation set up to run the project

Nationwide Ratepayer Organisation to be Formed

This may be of interest to anyone paying rates and wondering who is there to keep an eye on government spending...

A convention in Nelson held over the weekend (of the 10th and 11th of November 2018) has agreed to establish a Federation of Ratepayer Associations of New Zealand, and has appointed a steering group to make that happen.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Resident and Ratepayer Associations from throughout NZ/Aotearoa. Hosted by the Nelson Ratepayers Association, Chairperson John Walker says, “the Conference was a huge success, as a national organisation is long overdue.”

The Steering Group will recommend a constitution to all Ratepayers Associations, for adoption early in 2019.
